This book examines the crucial period between Washington's departure from office and the collapse of the old Republican order, when the United States more than doubled its territory, deepened its economic structures, and transformed its political leadership.</p><p>Aleksandar Korolija argues that this was not a period of general hegemonic crisis, but a period of <b>crises within hegemonic blocs</b>. The Federalist bloc collapsed, the Republican bloc rose to dominance, and later the same Republican order began to fragment under the pressure of war, finance, slavery, territorial expansion, and sectional conflict.</p><p>Drawing on Marx, Gramsci, Althusser, Wallerstein, and historical sociology, the book develops a model of <b>hegemonization</b> built around four analytical levels: structures, conjunctures, events, and strategic actors.
